Report: District 3 receives $505 per student from federal government

Mahomet-Seymour Community Unified School District 3 received $505 per student from the federal government in 2015, or approximately $1.53 million according to data published by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).

The $1,536,397 equals approximately 5.7 percent of District 3's budget. The state average for federal funding of public school districts is 8 percent, according to ISBE.

The Obama administration is threatening to pull federal funding of local schools that refuse to follow Washington directives. Most recently, it ordered all public schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity.

Chicago Public Schools gets 16 percent of its funding from the federal government, or twice the state average. Chicago property taxpayers pay for only 49 percent of their school bill; District 3 pays for 60.1 percent.

District 3 spent a total of $8,852 per student in 2015.

Among Champaign school districts, Champaign CUSD 4 ($1,056 per pupil) and Urbana SD 116 ($1,584 per pupil) receive more money from the federal government than District 3.

St Joseph Ogden CHSD 305 ($91 per pupil) and Rantoul Township HSD 193 ($379 per pupil) receive less.

Champaign Community Unified School District 4 spends the most money on public schools in Champaign, at $13,038 per pupil.
