The city of Champaign will celebrate the civic engagement of local citizens through its annual STAR Awards ceremony April 21 at the Hilton Garden Inn.
"The STAR Awards ceremony is held each year to celebrate the civic activities of those who work day in and day out to make Champaign a great place to live, work and play,” neighborhood coordinator John Ruffin said. “All those being honored at the STAR Awards were nominated by members of the public and we will recognize and thank each of them for their dedication and work towards improving our community.”
The city will honor 28 nominees for awards in seven categories. Each nominee was selected through a review by the Neighborhood Services Advisory Board.
Ann’s House, Busey Bank, Community Coalition, Community Plus Federal Credit Union, Emergency Family Shelter, One People, and Prosperity Gardens will be up for the Community Partner award.
Rabbi Alan Cook, Jaquelyn Monroe, Joe Muskin, and Linda Turnbull will compete for the Dave Benton Difference Maker award.
Staci Britten, Earl Evans, Elizabeth Mulvaney, Luyando Nelson, and Eric Stoecker will vie for the Good Neighbor award.
Randy Bishop and Steve McDowell are nominated for the Neighborhood Leadership award.
Clark Park and the United Garden Hills Neighborhood Association are nominated for Neighborhood of the Year award.
Champaign Park District, C-U Area Project, Brad Morris, and Delores Lloyd will be considered for the Neighborhood-Community Building award.
Ebony Shackelford, Garden Hills Student Action, Nikolas Ramkumar and Nipun Bhatia have been nominated for the Rising Star award.
The award ceremony begins at 7 p.m. following a reception at 6 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1501 S. Neil St. in Champaign.
