The village of Rantoul has issued its Annual Drinking Water Report, concluding the village's drinking water meets or exceeds state and federal standards.
The water is pumped from eight wells at depths of 225 to 300 feet to supply a daily average of 1.420,000 gallons of water to 13,000 people. The wells tap into an underground source of water known as the Mahomet Bedrock Valley Aquifer, which is made up of several layers of water and sand deposits created through three cycles of glacier cover and retreat. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency concluded that none of the eight wells is susceptible to contamination.
The village said it is continuing to work in partnership with the U.S. Air Force to cleanup the former Chanute Air Force Base, including relocating property, environmental remediation and redevelopment. The test results included in this year's water quality report do not show that the base has been a source of serious contamination.
Copies of the report are available on the village's website.
