City of Urbana Community Alternative Policing (UCAP) Advisory Committee met Nov. 9.

In Attendance:

Frankie Johnson, Kara Dudek, Park District

Clara Bright, Elsie Hedgspeth, Park District

John Schneider, Community Development, Lt. Joel Sanders, Police Department

Bill Gray, Public Works

Lt. Joel Sanders called the meeting to order at 5:36 p.m.

Kara Dudek from the Urbana Park District began with an explanation of Bank Shot Basketball, which hopefully will be implemented before Jettie Rhodes Day 2018. She also passed around and discussed plans and renderings for Crystal Lake. Kara then answered questions.

Elsie Hedgspeth continued for the park district by discussing the upcoming Turkey Trot, reporting on new additions to the event. She then reported on the newly created Outreach and Wellness department with the park district, which she will manage. Elsie was asked about the duckweed and blue green algae bloom, and she provided some clarification. She then mentioned that pool passes would be cheaper during Black Friday and January 1. Elsie concluded by announcing the National Elks Hoop Shoot that will be held at Brookens on December 16, which is a national free throw event free for children ages 8 to 13.

Bill Gray of public works began by discussing the construction projects that are being finished. He continued by reporting that the second and third leaf collection pick-ups are upcoming and the pick-ups have been reduced from four to three times in order to save money. Bill said the crews are getting ready for snow season, and he finished by answering questions that were posed during the last meeting and current meeting.

John Schneider of community development reported on the Illinois American Water site as well as the Care Centre site. He advised the Habitat homes on Church have begun construction and two more permits were issued for Habitat homes on Beslin. John continued by providing an update on Highland Green. He reported that the ribbon cutting for Leak and Sons Funeral Home was on October 28. He also said there was going to be a grand re-opening for the Aldi in Urbana, and the Panda Express on University is now open. John finished by reporting that the Harlow property has been purchased by Rector Property Management and will be renovated and used as the rental office. He fielded questions.

Lt. Sanders began by providing an update on the police department staffing, reporting that two officers recently graduated from PTI and there were three new officers being hired in January. He continued by reporting that PTI has entered into a three year contract with the standards board to stay open. He then fielded questions/concerns. Meeting adjourned at 6:16 p.m.
