The Champaign City Council will consider amendments to the liquor code that would allow restaurant patrons to bring their own alcohol, during a study session starting at 7 p.m. today in City Council Chambers.

So-called bring-your-own-bottle (BYOB) alcohol service is not currently covered or permitted under the existing alcohol code. A bill passed by the council in 1984 specifically prohibits BYOB. The amendments, proposed by the city's liquor commissioner, would create two allowable forms of BYOB, one for restaurants and one for non-restaurants.

Exactly how to license and regulate BYOB will be up to the council if it decides to take action at its next council meeting.
