Illinois redshirt sophomore Zach Viiala was named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Mar. 11 following his performances in the Fighting Illini’s recent victories over Northern Illinois, Oregon, and Washington.
Viiala received this conference honor for the first time in his career. This recognition also marks the third consecutive week that a University of Illinois student-athlete has earned the Big Ten Player of the Week award.
During these matches, Viiala achieved a perfect 4-0 record across singles and doubles play. He remains undefeated in singles competition this season with a 7-0 record. In doubles, he secured a close 7-6(6) win against Oregon’s Cameron Burton and Lachlan Robertson, followed by a 6-3 victory over Washington’s Stephane Kamendje and Rohan Belday. In singles play, Viiala posted a 6-2, 6-0 win against Northern Illinois’ Chiao Bo Suo Nan and then won 6-0, 6-0 over Oregon’s Cameron Burton.
