Former state university employee Peterson Karlan paid in $184K to pension fund, could collect $2.48M in retirement

Former state university employee George Peterson Karlan, who retired in August 2017, saved $184,043 toward a pension over 21 years working for state universities, State Universities Retirement System of Illinois records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Peterson Karlan would collect as much as $2.48 million, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Chambana Sun.

The projection assumes Peterson Karlan received $52,116 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 4 years of retirement, Peterson Karlan will have already received $218,032 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the state pension fund.
