Today is Wednesday, July 4, 2018. Here are local news reports from 100, 50 and 15 years ago:
In 1918, an estimated 10,000 people came to Chanute Field, with 3,000 automobiles reported on the grounds, for Chanute's Independence Day celebration.
In 1968, 5,000 people attended a fireworks display at Memorial Stadium, with Miss Champaign County, Cheryl Miller, singing "Till There Was You."
In 2003, the village of Rantoul agreed to pay a $4,446 settlement to the state for burning down a former Chanute Air Force Base building that contained asbestos.
