CHAMPAIGN CITY COUNCIL: Police Make Arrest in June 15 Shooting Investigation

Champaign City Council issued the following announcement on June 29.

Today, at approximately 6:51 AM, Champaign Police arrested 19-year-old Reonte R. Williams of Champaign as the suspect in a June 15, 2018 shooting that left an 18-year-old male injured with multiple gunshot wounds.

Based on police investigation, the victim and Williams, who were a part of an ongoing dispute, were in the 300 block of E. Hill St. when Williams shot the victim at close range and again as the victim ran from the scene. Patrol officers who were in the area around the time of the incident were flagged down by the victim, who was then transported to an area hospital for multiple non-life-threatening injuries.

Champaign Police developed pertinent information into the shooting and this morning served a court authorized search warrant at a residence in the 300 block of E. Church St., Champaign, where Reonte Williams was arrested without incident for the offenses of Attempted Murder and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. Williams was transported to the Champaign County Jail where he is pending arraignment. During a search of the residence, police also recovered three handguns, ammunition and suspected cannabis.

Although an arrest has been made, the investigation into this incident is on-going and Police ask that anyone with information call the Champaign Police Investigations Division at 217-351- 4545. Detectives will arrange to speak privately with anyone with information.
