Bonnett stepping down from Unit 4 School Board
Champaign school district officials announced Monday that Laurie Bonnett will step down from her post on the Champaign Unit 4 School District Board of Education at the end of the month.
Bonnett, a Champaign resident, said she is preparing to leave the area with her family in pursuit of a new opportunity. Her resignation takes effect Jan 25.
"Of all my volunteer work, my time as a Unit 4 Board of Education member has been the most fulfilling and meaningful work," Bonnett said. "I think most board members would agree that nothing prepares you for the extreme breadth and diversity of work that happens at the board level. I have learned a great deal about our education system that I could not have learned as a non-board member."
Bonnett praised the abilities of Champaign students as well as the support of the community for its schools as it prepares students for the future.
"It is my hope that this community takes the challenge to heart when faced with upcoming decisions for our future young leaders," she said. "They need the appropriate tools to enrich their learning and meet the challenges that await them. I am confident that this Board has the best interest of our entire community in mind as they proceed down this path of opportunity."
Superintendent Dr. Judy Wiegand and school board officials thanked Bonnet for her service and said the district will collaborate with regional education authorities to fill Bonnett's vacancy. Her term continues until April 2017.
