Second juvenile arrested in connection with March 21 fatal shooting in Champaign

A second teenager was arrested on April 2 in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred on March 21 at the Market Place Shopping Mall parking lot in Champaign.

The incident began when police responded to reports of a fight at approximately 6:14 p.m. During the altercation, at least one firearm was discharged, and a 16-year-old victim was struck. Officers and members of the Champaign Fire Department provided immediate medical aid before the victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. The victim died from their injuries later that night and was pronounced deceased at 11:44 p.m.

Shortly after the shooting, police located and arrested a 15-year-old suspect. Authorities announced that another 15-year-old suspect has now been taken into custody on a Warrant of Apprehension for Aggravated Battery with a Firearm. Due to state law protecting juveniles, no further identifying information about the suspects has been released.

Champaign Police say their investigation is ongoing and encourage anyone who witnessed the incident or may have cell phone footage to contact them at 217-351-4545. Detectives can arrange private meetings with witnesses if needed.
