The University of Illinois Fighting Illini baseball team defeated No. 19 Oregon, 16-13, on Apr. 19 at Illinois Field with a three-run walkoff home run by Kyle Schupmann.
The game featured a high-scoring finish, as both teams combined for 21 runs in the last three innings. The Illini scored 12 of those runs and clinched their first ranked home win of the season.
Schupmann ended his day going two-for-five at the plate with four runs batted in and two runs scored. His game-winning home run came in the bottom of the ninth inning after Michael Farina reached base and AJ Putty was intentionally walked. “On the 10th pitch of an at-bat that featured six total foul balls, Schupmann connected on a long ball to right on a full count to clinch the Illini win,” according to the team’s postgame summary.
Other notable performances included Farina reaching base four times with three hits and scoring twice; Nick Groves recording his thirteenth multi-hit game this season; J.R. Nelson extending his on-base streak to thirteen games; and Sam Mommer pitching the final one-and-two-thirds innings without allowing a run to secure his eighth scoreless appearance this year.
