Kannon Webster has been named Scholar Athlete of the Week for his performance during March 16-22, according to a March 26 announcement. The redshirt sophomore wrestler at the University of Illinois closed out his season with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Wrestling Championships, earning All-America honors for the first time in his career.
Webster competed in the 157-pound weight class and recorded a 5-2 record at the national tournament. His run included an upset win over third-seeded Meyer Shapiro from Cornell, which contributed to his placement among the top five wrestlers in his division.
Over the course of the season, Webster posted an overall record of 25-6 and achieved a dual meet mark of 12-3. He led his team with seven technical falls and accumulated 50 dual points, ranking second on his squad in that category. In addition to his national success, he earned a bronze medal at this year’s Big Ten Championships.
Webster is from Toulon, Illinois. He is majoring in Agriculture & Consumer Economics with a concentration in Agribusiness Markets & Management and is also pursuing a minor in Environmental Economics and Law at the University of Illinois.
His accomplishments reflect both athletic excellence on the mat and commitment to academic pursuits.
