A 15-year-old was arrested in Urbana on March 21 following a fatal shooting that occurred during a fight at the Market Place Shopping Mall parking lot, according to Champaign Police. The incident took place around 6:14 p.m., when officers responded to reports of an altercation and gunfire, resulting in a 16-year-old being shot.

Police and fire department personnel provided immediate medical aid before the victim was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Despite these efforts, the victim died from their injuries later that night. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity due to their age.

The suspect was initially taken into custody on a Warrant of Apprehension for Aggravated Battery with a Firearm. After the victim’s death, police forwarded the case to the Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office for additional charges related to homicide. Because both individuals are juveniles, state law prohibits releasing further identifying information.

Champaign Police said the investigation is ongoing and detectives are working to determine if others were involved in the altercation. The department is asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has cell phone footage of it to contact them at 217-351-4545. Arrangements can be made for private conversations with witnesses.

Community members wishing to remain anonymous can submit tips through Crime Stoppers by phone, online, or via mobile app. All information provided will remain confidential; calls are routed through a third-party center without caller ID tracking or recording.

All individuals connected with this case are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
