The University of Illinois women’s track and field team finished in third place with 42 points at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 14, marking the highest team finish in school history. The event took place at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

This achievement is significant as it represents the first indoor team trophy for the program and surpasses their previous best finish of sixth place in 1996. The third-place result also ties for the second-highest finish ever by an Illinois women’s sport.

“This is history for Illinois and we would like the world to know,” said Petros Kyprianou, director of track, field and cross country. “We’re proud of our athletes, administration and everyone that was behind us. The sky is the limit for this team. JaiCieonna is our MVP as a freshman. She did a great job scoring 12 points for us and almost won the pentathlon outright. I compare her to Kendal Williams and Anna Hall. I think she’s the next big American heptathlete.” Kyprianou also said, “Sophia did great for us too. I think she has a real chance to medal in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. She’s just now scratching the surface of her immense talent.” He added that on the men’s side, “we’re redshirting some good athletes… Men mature slower than women so I think we will be a consistent top-10 team soon.”

Rose Yeboah became national runner-up in the high jump by matching her school record height of 1.94 meters, making her only the second high jumper in school history to earn indoor All-America honors three years running since Stacy Ann Grant (1997-99). Freshman JaiCieonna Gero-Holt contributed significantly by finishing tied for fourth in high jump and earning runner-up status in pentathlon, becoming both team MVP and first freshman All-American in two individual events since Celena Modie-Milner (1989).

On the men’s side, Jip de Greef placed third in heptathlon with a score of 6,120 points—the program’s second-best mark—while Luuk Pelkmans became Illinois’ first freshman All-American in heptathlon with his fourth-place finish.

The University of Illinois Fighting Illini women’s track and field program participates in both indoor and outdoor competitions according to its official website. The program enhances university athletic heritage according to its official website, belongs to the Big Ten Conference according to its official website, aids student-athletes academically according to its official website, competes at NCAA Division I level according to its official website, and is based in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois according to its official website.

Looking ahead, Kyprianou said that new talent will join both men’s and women’s teams next year: “Next year we will have some good high jumpers join and outdoors we have a solid high jumper joining us as well.” The Illini are set to begin their outdoor season next week at River City Relays.
