The University of Illinois Fighting Illini Women’s Tennis team lost to top-seeded Ohio State on April 24 in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Tournament, ending their run with a 4-0 defeat at the Auer Tennis Complex in Columbus, Ohio.
This result brings Illinois’ season record to 13-13. The match outcome is significant as it concludes the team’s participation in the conference tournament and leaves them awaiting potential selection for further postseason play. The Buckeyes, ranked fifth nationally, improved their season record to 22-3 with this win.
Ohio State secured the doubles point by winning matches at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles courts, while play at No. 1 was left unfinished between two ranked pairs. In singles competition, Ohio State clinched victories at positions one, six, and two to seal the overall match. Illinois sophomore Tess Bucher was leading her match at No. 5 singles when it was abandoned due to overall match completion rules.
Several matches went unfinished as per collegiate tennis regulations once a team has secured enough points for victory.
