The University of Illinois Fighting Illini women’s tennis team lost to No. 20 Washington, 4-0, in Seattle on March 29, ending a four-match winning streak. The match was played indoors at the Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center and marked only the second Big Ten defeat for Illinois this season.
This result leaves Illinois with a record of 9-8 overall and 5-2 in Big Ten Conference play as they pass the halfway point of their conference schedule. The outcome is significant for the team’s position within the conference standings as it seeks to build momentum heading into upcoming matches.
Washington secured victories in doubles at courts two and three, while court one remained unfinished. In singles play, Washington clinched wins on courts four, three, and two to reach the required four points for victory before other matches could conclude. Unfinished singles contests saw McKenna Schaefbauer (7-5), Alice Xu (6-4), and Cara Mester (6-4) each take their opening sets before play was halted.
Illinois will return home next weekend for matches against Michigan on April 4 and Michigan State on April 5 at Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Central Time.
