The University of Illinois men’s and women’s track and field teams will begin their outdoor season at the Florida Relays, scheduled for April 3-4 at James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville, Florida, according to an announcement on Apr. 1.
This event marks the transition from indoor to outdoor competition for both programs. The Fighting Illini women’s team recently achieved a historic third-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships, the highest in program history. Sophia Beckmon became the first indoor field event national champion for Illinois in the long jump with a leap of 6.84 meters (22-5 1/4), maintaining her position as national leader throughout the indoor season.
Freshman JaiCieonna Gero-Holt was recognized as the team’s leading scorer at nationals with twelve points after earning All-American honors in two events—the first freshman to do so for Illinois. She finished second nationally in the pentathlon with a score of 4,466 and placed fourth in high jump with a mark of 1.85 meters (6-0 3/4). Additional contributors included Phethisang Makhethe and Rose Yeboah, who each earned silver medals in weight throw and high jump respectively, while Jordan Koskondy secured fifth place in weight throw.
On the men’s side, Jip de Greef placed third overall in heptathlon scoring a program-best of 6,120 points to earn All-American status. Luuk Pelkmans became Illinois’ first freshman male All-American in heptathlon by finishing fourth with a score of 6,081.
