Illinois softball defeated Maryland, 5-4, on Apr. 18 after a seventh-inning rally that tied the series at one game each. The victory was led by sophomore catcher Jackie Yeager’s home run and freshman pitcher Abby Sabalaskey’s relief performance.

In Saturday’s contest, Skylar Brennan opened with a base hit and later contributed an RBI single. After Maryland took an early lead with a two-run homer from Matti Benson, Yeager responded with her third home run of the season in the second inning. Although Illinois loaded the bases twice without scoring during earlier innings, they capitalized late when Yeager singled and eventually scored on a Maryland error. Brennan’s RBI single tied it at four before Adisyn Caryl drove in Ava Moore for what became the winning run.
Sabalaskey pitched 1.2 innings in relief to earn her sixth win of the season while allowing just one hit. Starting pitcher Megan Nuechterlein went over five innings and gave up four earned runs.
Eight out of nine starting batters for Illinois recorded hits during this game. Brennan went three-for-five at bat—her second three-hit game this year—raising her batting average to .341. Moore had two hits including her second double of the season and has now hit safely in three of Illinois’ last four games.
