Illinois softball lost to Iowa, 21-15, on March 13 in its first Big Ten Conference game of the season at Eichelberger Field in Urbana. The game marked the highest-scoring contest of the year for Illinois and dropped their record to 8-16 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
The matchup was significant as it opened Big Ten competition for Illinois, which participates in NCAA Division I intercollegiate softball according to the official website. The Fighting Illini, as the University of Illinois athletics teams are known, host their home games in Urbana and compete within the Big Ten Conference.
Iowa took an early lead with three runs in the first inning, but Illinois responded quickly. Keirys Click and Adisyn Caryl contributed base hits, while Skylar Brennan executed a sacrifice bunt to score Illinois’ first run. Eileen Donahue followed with a two-run home run. Eden Echevarria added a hit before Click delivered a grand slam—the team’s first this season—giving Illinois an 8-3 advantage after one inning.
The Hawkeyes rallied with eight runs in the third inning, including home runs from Brianna Johnson and Leah McAnally, overtaking Illinois for a 12-10 lead. Johnson hit another home run in the fourth as Iowa extended its lead. Illinois narrowed the gap with Ellie Haggard’s seventh home run of the season and additional runs from Echevarria and others. Donahue recorded her second two-run homer of the night, marking her third home run this year. Despite these efforts, Iowa scored six more times in the sixth inning and once more in the seventh to secure victory.
Abby Sabalaskey pitched 4.2 innings for Illinois and was charged with her sixth loss of the season.
Postgame notes highlighted that this was Illinois’ highest offensive output since scoring 19 runs against SIUE on March 27, 2024, and their most runs scored in a Big Ten game since defeating Minnesota on April 3, 2022. Donahue went three-for-three at bat with two home runs and four RBI; Click’s grand slam drove in four RBI; Caryl had her ninth multi-hit game of the year; Haggard notched her seventh homer; and Echevarria achieved her first multi-hit outing as an Illini.
The Fighting Illini will conclude their series against Iowa on Saturday, March 14 with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m., followed by a second game approximately half an hour later. Admission is free at Eichelberger Field and both games will be streamed on B1G+.
