Illinois softball is set to participate in the Cardinal Classic tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, from March 6 to March 8. The Fighting Illini will open play against LIU on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Central Time. The schedule for the rest of the weekend has been adjusted due to weather, and updates are available on the team’s official website.

The University of Illinois Fighting Illini Women’s Softball program competes in the Big Ten Conference at the NCAA Division I level, as stated on their official website. The team holds its home games in Urbana, Illinois.

In their last tournament appearance at the Hilltopper Spring Fling in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Illinois secured two wins: a 10-0 victory over IU Indy and a 4-2 win against Ball State. Pitchers Abby Sabalaskey and Karley Yergler each delivered complete games to help lead the team. Sabalaskey improved her season record to 5-4 with her performance against IU Indy, while Yergler earned her first win of the season against Ball State.

Adisyn Caryl has been a consistent contributor for Illinois this season, recording hits in 15 out of 19 games and leading the team with seven multi-hit performances. Her three-run home run against Ball State was decisive in that game, and she also drove in three runs against IU Indy to secure a run-rule victory. Caryl currently has an 11-game streak of reaching base.

Skylar Brennan typically bats leadoff or second for Illinois and reached base in all five games at the recent tournament. She leads the team with five doubles and shares the lead in runs scored with Adisyn Caryl and Ava Moore.

Freshman pitcher Abby Sabalaskey continues to stand out as the only left-handed pitcher on staff. She pitched two more complete games during the Hilltopper Spring Fling, including a shutout against IU Indy—the team’s first of the year. Sabalaskey leads Illinois pitchers with a 1.47 WHIP, a 2.29 ERA, and has recorded 20 strikeouts over 55 innings.

Illinois will face Long Island University (LIU), which is still seeking its first win this season after competing at the UCSB Tournament in California. Senior Nyae’ Villalta leads LIU offensively with a .400 batting average and strong slugging numbers. Pitchers Sarah Wall and Gigi Clavel have shared most of LIU’s innings but have struggled with high ERAs.

Ball State will be another opponent for Illinois; they split two previous meetings this season at Bowling Green. Ball State recently won three straight games there and is led by Lindsey DeRoeck at bat, who holds a .463 average and high slugging numbers. The pitching staff has seen effective outings from several players.

Host Louisville enters with a record of 15-4 overall and recently won its first ACC series over Stanford. Offensively, Bri Despines and Chelsea Mack have contributed significantly; Mack ranks second nationally for stolen bases attempted successfully (18-for-19). Pitchers Alyssa Zabala (2.05 ERA) and Anna Wise (2.50 ERA) have handled most innings for Louisville.

In terms of series history, Illinois is 5-2 all-time against Ball State after their latest meeting resulted in a win for Illinois last Sunday at Bowling Green. Against LIU, Illinois holds a 4-1 advantage; their last matchup was an 11-3 win for Illinois in Florida in March 2017. Versus Louisville, Illinois is ahead 7-4 all-time but lost their most recent contest by one run earlier this year at Ulmer Stadium.

Head coach Tyra Perry previously coached Ball State during the 2014–2015 seasons before joining Illinois, earning accolades such as MAC Coach of the Year and leading Ball State to its first NCAA Regional victory.

Perry recently achieved her 700th career coaching win over Providence on February 21 in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is seven wins away from reaching her 300th victory as head coach at Illinois—a milestone she could reach as early as March 15 against Iowa.

The Fighting Illini nickname represents all athletics teams from University of Illinois according to their official site. The women’s softball program focuses on intercollegiate competition within NCAA Division I as detailed here.
