The University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s tennis team announced on Apr. 2 that it will host three home matches at the Atkins Tennis Center this weekend against Eastern Kentucky, Indiana, and Purdue. The matches are scheduled for Friday and Sunday, with Illinois facing Eastern Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. CT and Indiana at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, followed by a match against Purdue on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT.
These contests matter as they mark key opportunities for the No. 14-ranked Illini to strengthen their record in both nonconference and Big Ten play while engaging fans through various promotions such as International Night and Easter-themed events.
Illinois enters the weekend with a strong record of 16-5 overall and a 6-2 mark in Big Ten play after recently defeating Penn State with a decisive 6-1 scoreline. In that match, Kenta Miyoshi led singles play while freshmen Adam Jilly and Sasha Colleu secured straight-set wins to clinch victory for the Illini.
Eastern Kentucky arrives with an 11-13 record but is currently on a two-match winning streak. Indiana holds a record of 9-7 overall (3-4 in conference), having just beaten Purdue last Saturday; they feature two doubles teams ranked among the top fifty nationally. Purdue comes into Sunday’s contest seeking improvement after falling to Indiana last week; their doubles pair Aleksa Krivokapic and Maj Premzl is ranked No. 57 in the nation.
Several Illinois players have received recent recognition: Adam Jilly was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week three times this season, Zach Viiala earned his first Big Ten Player of the Week honor earlier this spring, William Mroz also claimed his first career conference weekly award in February, while Kenta Miyoshi secured ITA Singles All-America honors for the second consecutive year.
The Fighting Illini’s roster includes five freshmen from its highly regarded recruiting class—ranked No. 2 nationally before Gabriel Debru joined—and features student-athletes who have achieved high rankings or titles in international junior competitions.
