The University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s tennis team was defeated by Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on April 24, ending their run with a close 4-3 loss.
The match, held in Ojai, California, saw Illinois secure straight-set singles victories on Courts 1, 2, and 6. However, Ohio State claimed the doubles point and won singles matches at positions No. 3, 4, and 5 to advance to the finals. The doubles competition was closely contested before Ohio State took the lead with wins on Courts 2 and 3.
Illinois gained momentum in singles play by winning four opening sets. Gabriel Debru delivered a two-set victory over Aidan Kim at No.1 singles (6-2, 6-3), while Kenta Miyoshi followed with a win against Jack Anthrop (6-3, 6-3) at No.2. Despite these efforts and another win from Hayden Jones at No.6 (7-6(2), 6-4), the Buckeyes secured key points in other matches to clinch the overall victory.
The deciding match came down to Court No.5 where Zach Viiala of Illinois faced Bryce Nakashima of Ohio State. After splitting the first two sets, Nakashima prevailed in the third set for Ohio State’s final point.
