The University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s tennis team will play two away matches against Ohio State and Penn State, according to a March 26 announcement. The No. 14-ranked Illini are scheduled to compete against No. 2 Ohio State on Friday at 5 p.m. Central Time, followed by a match at Penn State on Sunday at 9 a.m.
These matches mark the penultimate road weekend for Illinois in Big Ten conference play this season. The team holds an overall record of 15-4 and is currently 5-1 in conference competition.
In their most recent outing, Illinois saw its eleven-match winning streak end with a narrow loss to Michigan State at Atkins Tennis Center. Despite singles victories from William Mroz, Kenta Miyoshi, and Zach Viiala, Michigan State claimed the doubles point and secured enough singles wins for the overall victory.
Ohio State enters the weekend ranked second nationally with a record of 17-3 and features several top-ranked singles players such as Aidan Kim (No. 9), Preston Stearns (No.16), Jack Anthrop (No.27), and Alex Okonkwo (No.32). The Buckeyes also have five ranked doubles teams, including Brandon Carpico/Nikita Filin who are ranked No.1 nationally in doubles.
Penn State holds a record of 13-7 overall but has struggled recently in Big Ten play with only one win out of five conference matches so far this season.
Illinois’ roster includes several athletes who have earned weekly honors from the Big Ten Conference during the current campaign: Adam Jilly was named Freshman of the Week three times; Zach Viiala received Player of the Week recognition; Gabriel Debru was honored as Player of the Week; Sasha Colleu was named Freshman of the Week; and William Mroz also claimed Player of the Week honors.
