Illinois men’s tennis team secures 4-1 victory over Michigan at home

The University of Illinois men’s tennis team continued its winning streak with a 4-1 win against Michigan at Atkins Tennis Center on March 20. The Fighting Illini, ranked No. 10, have now won their last 11 matches and remain undefeated in Big Ten play.

This result is significant as it strengthens Illinois’ position in the conference and highlights the team’s consistent performance this season. The match began with Illinois securing the doubles point after victories on Courts 2 and 3. Kenta Miyoshi and William Mroz defeated Bjorn Swenson and Nicholas Steiglehner, while David Bakonyi and Zach Viiala overcame Mert Oral and Alex Cairo.

Head coach Brad Dancer said, “Big hats off to Michigan. They fight so hard. Incredibly impressed with their play at the #1 spot. That was a high-level match. Our guys are also fighting their tails off. The belief is coming. Anyone who wants to see the best in college tennis should come out on Sunday. It should be an incredible showdown.” In singles play, Viiala was first to finish with a decisive win over Arnav Bhandari, followed by Miyoshi’s straight-set victory against Swenson for his tenth ranked win of the season. Adam Jilly clinched the overall match for Illinois with his win over Steiglehner.
