Illinois baseball splits doubleheader with Minnesota, secures series win

The University of Illinois Fighting Illini baseball team secured a series victory over Minnesota after splitting a Saturday doubleheader at Illinois Field, according to a March 14 announcement. Minnesota won the first game 1-0, but Illinois responded with a 4-2 win in the second game.

This result brings Illinois to a 10-8 overall record and 2-4 in conference play, while Minnesota stands at 15-5 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten games. The series win marks the sixth consecutive time Illinois has taken the series against Minnesota.

In Game 1, Regan Hall delivered his third straight quality start by pitching over six innings without allowing an earned run and striking out five batters. Sam Reed and Liam McKillop contributed scoreless relief appearances. The second game saw Illinois rally in the seventh inning, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs on two hits and three walks. Jack Zebig, Brayden Mazzacano, J.R. Nelson, and Nick Groves each drove in runs during that inning.

Kyle Remington earned the win in Game 2 by pitching four innings of relief with three strikeouts. Aidan Flinn started for Illinois and threw four scoreless innings with four strikeouts, marking his longest collegiate outing. Reed Gannon closed out the game for his second save of the season.

Several players extended personal streaks or reached milestones during the doubleheader. Nick Groves extended his on-base streak to 30 games, tying for tenth-best among Illini since 2004. Michael Farina has now reached base in all eighteen games he has played as an Illini. AJ Putty recorded hits in both games and has hit safely in eleven of his last twelve contests.
