Illinois defeated Penn State 6-0 on Mar. 29, securing its third consecutive Big Ten series win with a road victory. The Fighting Illini improved to a 6-6 record in conference play after pitchers Aidan Flinn and Reed Gannon combined for a three-hit shutout.
The result is significant as it demonstrates Illinois’ momentum in the Big Ten Conference, where consistent wins can impact postseason opportunities and team morale. According to the official website, the University of Illinois Fighting Illini baseball program participates in both conference and non-conference games to build competitive experience.
Gannon earned the win by pitching five innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters. Flinn started the game with four scoreless innings and three strikeouts. At the plate, J.R. Nelson went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in (RBI), while Will Johannes was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Michael Farina and Nick Groves also contributed RBIs for Illinois.
Johannes began scoring with a double in the second inning, while Flinn ended a Penn State threat in the fourth by forcing an inning-ending double play after bases were loaded. The Illini extended their lead throughout the game, including key hits from Nelson and Groves late in the contest.
Individual performances included Groves extending his on-base streak to 38 games—now tied for fourth-longest by an Illini since 2004—and Schupmann recording hits in eight consecutive contests. Gannon’s outing marked his longest collegiate appearance so far this season.
This shutout was Illinois’ second of the season but their first against a Big Ten opponent since April of last year. The pitching staff allowed only three hits—the fewest they have given up during conference play since April 2024 against Northwestern—as reported by the official website.
The University of Illinois Fighting Illini baseball program operates at NCAA Division I level under Big Ten Conference rules according to its official site, offering student-athletes opportunities for competition, development, and academic achievement as part of intercollegiate athletics at University of Illinois.
Looking ahead, Illinois (14-12 overall) will face Illinois State on Tuesday before traveling to Purdue next weekend.
