The University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s tennis team and five of its student-athletes have been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for their academic achievements during the 2024-25 academic year. The entire squad exceeded a GPA benchmark of 3.2, qualifying them for the ITA All-Academic Team award.

Five team members—Tyler Bowers, Mathis Debru, Kenta Miyoshi, Zach Viiala, and Jeremy Zhang—were named ITA Scholar-Athletes for maintaining a GPA of at least 3.50.

Bowers, who received this honor for the first time in his collegiate career, also earned Academic All-Big Ten recognition. “Named the Illini’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient following the 2024-25 season,” Bowers achieved 16 singles wins and 18 doubles victories during his redshirt sophomore season.

Debru was acknowledged with multiple distinctions including Academic All-Big Ten, CSC Academic All-District, and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors. “Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural and consumer economics in May,” Debru secured 17 singles victories throughout his senior year.

Miyoshi was awarded several academic accolades such as CSC Academic All-District and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors. As the “2025 Big Ten Player of the Year,” he won a team-high 30 singles matches and was named an ITA National Player to Watch.

Viiala completed his first collegiate season with notable performances both academically and athletically. He earned CSC Academic All-District and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors while securing significant wins in both singles and doubles categories.

Zhang closed out his sophomore year with commendable performances on the court as well as earning CSC Academic All-District and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar nods. The Sydney native had one of the highest numbers of doubles wins on the team.
