Illinois wrestling has qualified eight athletes for the NCAA Championships, which will take place from March 19 to 21 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, according to a March 17 announcement. This marks the second consecutive year that Illinois has sent eight wrestlers to the national tournament, a feat last achieved by the program during the 2014 and 2015 championships.
The qualification of eight wrestlers is significant for the Illinois program, reflecting both depth and consistency across weight classes. The event will be broadcast on ESPN platforms, allowing fans to follow the competition closely.
Leading the group is Lucas Byrd, reigning national champion at 133 pounds. Byrd enters his fifth NCAA Championships as a three-time All-American with a season record of 20-2. He led Illinois with 62 points in dual matches and maintained an undefeated dual record of 17-0. Byrd’s career achievements include 116 wins—tied for ninth most in school history—and an .866 win percentage, which ranks fifth all-time for the program.
Other qualifiers include Kannon Webster (157 pounds), who earned his spot after winning bronze at the Big Ten Championships and compiled a team-high seven technical falls this season; Luke Luffman (285 pounds), making his fifth appearance at nationals; Chris Moore (184 pounds); Braeden Scoles (165 pounds); Colin Kelly (174 pounds); Spencer Moore (125 pounds); and Michael Gioffre (149 pounds). Several of these athletes are returning qualifiers or have posted notable records in dual meets and conference action.
The seeds for Illinois wrestlers range from seventh to twenty-sixth across their respective weight classes. Notably, both Byrd and Webster are seeded seventh in their divisions. Multiple team members have also recorded top-20 victories during the season.
Looking ahead, Illinois aims to build on its recent success at nationals as it competes against top programs from around the country.
