Illinois Athletics has announced the death of Dave Downey, a prominent figure in University of Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball history. Downey died on Saturday at the age of 84.
Downey, who was from Canton, Illinois, played for the Illini from 1961 to 1963. He was named team MVP three times and led the team in both scoring and rebounding each season. In his senior year, he earned first-team All-America honors from the Helms Foundation and was also a first-team All-Big Ten selection. That same season, he helped guide Illinois to a Big Ten Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Mideast Regional Final.
On February 16, 1963, Downey set a school record by scoring 53 points in a game against Indiana—a record that remains unbroken after more than six decades. The courtside club at State Farm Center is named Club 53 to honor this achievement. Academically, Downey received the Big Ten Medal of Honor as Illinois’ recipient in 1963.
By the end of his collegiate career, Downey had become Illinois’ all-time leading scorer with 1,360 points (now ranked 25th) and leading rebounder with 790 rebounds (now ranked 10th). His career averages—18.9 points per game (fifth all-time) and 11 rebounds per game (third all-time)—remain among the best in program history.
Downey’s contributions were recognized through several honors: he was selected for the Illinois Basketball All-Century Team, included in the Honored Jerseys program, and inducted into the Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame in 2018. Beyond basketball, he built a successful business career and remained active within Champaign-Urbana community organizations. He also served on leadership boards such as the University of Illinois Board of Trustees.
