Staff from the Neighborhood Services Department attended a Habitat for Humanity home dedication on Hill Street on March 18. Rob Kowalski, Neighborhood Services Director, spoke at the event representing the HOME Consortium, which provided funding and support for building the house.
The event highlights ongoing efforts to create affordable housing in Champaign. The new home was built on a lot donated by the City of Champaign through its lot disposition process. This process gives Habitat for Humanity priority access to surplus infill lots before they are offered to the public.
Kowalski said that this approach ensures City-owned lots are used to support Habitat for Humanity’s work in creating affordable homeownership opportunities.
The collaboration between local government and organizations like Habitat for Humanity aims to address housing needs in the community. By prioritizing surplus land for affordable housing projects, city officials hope to make homeownership more accessible.
Looking ahead, city staff say they will continue working with partners such as Habitat for Humanity to provide similar opportunities and support future homeowners.
