The Champaign Police Department announced on March 12 that it will join the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and over 200 law enforcement agencies in a campaign to address impaired driving from March 13 through March 23. The effort coincides with St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and aims to keep streets safe through high-visibility enforcement across Illinois.
The initiative is important as it seeks to reduce accidents and injuries caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, prescription medications, or other intoxicants. Increased patrols are intended to deter unsafe behavior during a time when celebrations may lead to higher rates of impaired driving.
“Our community deserves to be safe on our streets, and impaired driving puts everyone at risk,” said Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “We’re asking everyone to celebrate responsibly by avoiding impaired driving, including being proactive to designate a driver and not allowing friends to drive under the influence of intoxicants.”
During the campaign, officers will focus on arterial routes in Champaign and enforce laws related to impaired driving as well as seat belt use and other traffic regulations. Those found violating these rules may receive citations or written warnings when appropriate. The department encourages residents to plan ahead by designating sober drivers and ensuring friends or family do not drive while impaired.
These enforcement efforts are supported by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and are conducted in addition to regular police patrols in Champaign.
Looking ahead, officials hope that increased awareness and visible law enforcement presence will encourage safer choices among drivers during holiday periods.
