The City of Champaign’s Public Works Director has announced that the sidewalk snow and ice removal ordinance is now active for the Downtown, Midtown, and Campustown areas. This decision follows a recorded snowfall of at least two inches on Saturday.

According to city regulations, property owners in these designated areas are required to clear their sidewalks within 24 hours of the declaration. The compliance period starts at 11:45 a.m. on Sunday, January 25, 2026, and ends at 11:45 a.m. on Monday, January 26, 2025.

Sidewalks must be cleared to either the full width or up to forty-eight inches, whichever is less. For properties located at corners, ramps must also be cleared to ensure a continuous path from block to block. The city may remove snow from non-compliant sidewalks at the owner’s expense.

The city expressed its appreciation for property owners’ cooperation in keeping sidewalks safe for pedestrians and those using different forms of transportation. A map showing the affected Downtown and Campustown areas as well as details about the Sidewalk Snow Removal Ordinance are available on the city’s website at champaignil.gov/snow.

Residents and businesses are reminded not to deposit snow from their properties onto city streets due to safety concerns for vehicles. Additionally, everyone throughout Champaign is encouraged to keep sidewalks clear for pedestrian safety and accessibility. Those located along Safe Routes to School are specifically urged to maintain clear walkways for students and parents; online maps for these routes can be accessed through city resources.
