The Champaign Schools Board of Education approved the hiring of three new assistant principals Tuesday.

Westview Elementary Assistant Principal Derrick Cooper will take over as assistant principal of Central High School. Cooper taught physical education and health for five years before serving as interim dean of students at Centennial High School for the first half of 2015 and then moving onto his current role at Westview.

Assistant principal at Howard Elementary William Aldridge will fill Cooper's vacancy at Westview. He's being transferred into the position as the district trims the number of assistant principals at Dr. Howard from two to one. Aldridge has been with Unit 4 since 2008, when he came on as a high school social studies teacher.

Interim assistant principal of Franklin Middle School Tamika Gardner will assume her position permanently. Gardner has also held administrative posts at Prairie Elementary School and a variety of teaching positions at McLean County and Unit 4 schools, where she started teaching in 2002.

All of the appointments will begin at the start of the 2016-17 school year.
