Westview Elementary School kindergarten teacher Mary Coash was honored last week with the 2015 Earth Partners Educator of the Year award from the Champaign County Farm Bureau Foundation for her use of agriculture as an educational tool.

Coash has eagerly taken advantage of the Farm Bureau's Earth Partners program that provides resources for farming and food system education. She has also used container gardens to teacher her students about the growing cycle.

Coash received the honor in front of nearly 300 members of the Farm Bureau at Champaign's iHotel on Jan. 25.

“For many years, Mary has borrowed The Learning Barn from the Farm Bureau and has adapted the resources to fit her needs in the classroom," Earth Partners Coordinator Myla Munro said. "When I speak to her students, it’s clear they have spent time discussing agriculture throughout their regular class schedule."

The Farm Bureau's Earth Partners program teaches food and farming topics to more than 9,000 students each year.
